As a professional journalist, I began writing about heritaqge poultry after my daughter and I acquired our first chickens in the 1980s. I wrote regularly for publications such as the Poultry Press, filling the niche for information about historic breeds. When Voyageur Press invited me to write a book to share that knowledge with others, I put aside other work and dedicated my time to poultry. How to Raise Chickens was warmly received and Voyageur Press decided a second book, How to Raise Poultry, would also be welcome. It was published in March 2009 and includes ducks, geese, swans, turkeys, guineafowl, game birds and ratites as well as chickens.
I'm currently writing a series of short breed descriptions of historic breeds. A hatchery owner has offered his collection of poultry photos, acquired over 30 years, to illustrate them. A colleague and I are compiling information on the history and cooking of geese. I am a regular guest on Andy Schneider's Chicken Whisperer radio program, talking about historic breeds. Traditional breeds are the best choice for small flocks.
